We really cannot wait a whole year
What a joy to have not only World Hearing Day in March, but International Women’s Day as well. 2026 International Women’s Day that started in 1978 will take place this Sunday on March 8th. The buzz is inspiring as small and large organisations such as The Toronto Raptors, Kiss 92.5 Radio, and Sinai Health. If you’re in the Toronto area or were traveling, did you head downtown for the 2026 Women’s Day Rally Saturday March 7th? ( For route and directions https://lnkd.in/e35u_DR2 ) Why is International Women’s Day important and what does it hope to achieve?
Our team strives to facilitate healthy discussion surrounding the deaf and hard of hearing community on all levels and what our community can do to close accessibility gaps. In 2022, StatsCan reported over 1.6 million people had a hearing disability. For women+ aged 15-44, the amount was 2.6%, while the percentage increased to 7.9% for women+ 45 years and over. One particular organization, DAWN Canada based in Montreal known for working to eliminate poverty, discrimination and violence against women and gender diverse individuals who are deaf or living with a disability. Their website is bursting with resources, studies, and ways to donate.
We’ve discussed the start of International Women’s day, resources available to women+ in the deaf and hard of hearing community, and now it’s time to highlight those in the workplace. On February 3, 2022, a Deaf woman named Shiran Zhavian from New York City graduated from her intensive forensic chemist training program under the United States Drug Enforcement Adminstration (DEA). This makes Shiran the first Deaf female forensic chemist to work for the DEA. Working in STEM is no small feat and we’re delighted to share.
Is there anyone In your life you’d like to highlight?
